Crime Safety Tips

Here is a website founded to inform people on tips in order to keep safe from crime in urban cities. I feel like this a good website because now more than ever the crime rate is rising at a high rate due to the economy. Due the rise in the crime people need to be aware and be able to stay safe in the communities they live in. The more and more people who become aware of these tips, the more and more likely we are to see a small drop in the crime rate. Even though it may not be a significant drop in the crime rate and drop in the crime rate will help alot more the people think. I believe that people need to be informed about things like this in order to keep themselves and thier loved ones safes from situations that can be easily avoided by following these tips. Violence and crime are not new problems and have always attracted public scrutiny. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure—that means educate yourself on each of the destinations you attend before you go there, so that you may begin to know what to expect, what to avoid and what to savour during your trip.

Ask. “Ask your local guesthouse or hostel manager for advice on ‘safe’ vs ‘unsafe’ local areas. As a general rule, city streets that include children and women suggest the area is safer for everyone.”

Blend into the background. “When you travel to foreign countries, avoid wearing loud T-shirts. Leave the flags, team jackets, and baseball caps with funny sayings at home. If you stand out from the crowd, you are more noticeable to thieves or anyone who might have a gripe against your country.”

Appear confident when walking around in public. “At night try to stay in well-lit densely populated areas. Travel in groups where possible—rather than by yourself.”

Keep to the middle. “If you are walking in quiet, dark streets, if possible stay in the middle of the road and watch for traffic. This gives you more reaction time to flee an attack or defend yourself if required. If someone is waiting to ambush you they have a greater distance to before an attack.”

Don’t look too obviously lost—even if you are. “You can always walk purposefully into a shop, bank or hotel to ask for directions or consult a map.”

Don’t be a pickpocket magnet. “Watch out for narrow aisles of trains and on city buses or subway—the trickiest time on bus and subway is when you are getting on or off with a crush of people. Pickpockets often stand in the crowd right by the door so they can hop off as soon as they make a hit.”

ATMs. “Use a machine located inside a store/shop, or inside a gas/petrol station . This is a safer environment to use these machines and makes it more difficult for criminals to case/view people using the machine.”
Source: Be Careful Out There.

Carry a ‘dummy’ wallet. “Consider carrying a ‘dummy wallet’ holding a small amount of cash. If you are directly confronted by a mugger, you can hand over the dummy wallet and avoid further distress.”

Be there with bells on. “Place Christmas type bells on your carry on, and when someone tries to move it, you will hear. Always, when standing around or sitting drinking coffee, keep your foot through the strap. If someone drops something, or something happens, look at your backpack. This may be a diversion to steal your pack.” Source: 1000tips4trips.com

Do not resist. “If a robber confronts you, co-operate. Don’t risk physical harm. Try to remain calm and alert. Tell the robber if you need to make any sudden moves. Tell the truth to all questions asked.”

Try to avoid hailing a cabs in the street. “Ask your hotel to call a cab for you—or a local restaurant or bar. They will take note of the number of the taxi and the driver’s name. At airports and bus stations there are official taxis that you should consider taking.”

URBAN BRIGHT SAFETY

Economy of Crime

In an article by the New York Times, it shows us the direct link between the economy and crime. It tells at this time especially during a bad economy, we need to keep any eye for crime now more than ever before. The terrible economy directly leads to the abandonment of neighborhoods , failing schools and school systems, and startling crime rates. It is quoted that every single recession since the the 1950's has resulted in or been associated with an increase in crime, most particularly property crime and robbery. The economy is affecting the lives of many, it changes neighborhoods because homes are being abandoned and foreclosed on. This directly leads to more and more people living on the streets, and when you live on the streets you will do anything in your power to earn money to survive. This is where crime comes in, more and more people who live on the street have no other option but to commit crimes in order to survive. So this helps prove the theory that when the economy is bad the crime rate will rise. I believe that in Urban situations this problem is at is worse and their is a higher likelihood of crime to be committed. For example, there are more potential victims, there are more people walking the streets, more people carrying shopping bags, more people lining up at atm's, and more people driving and parking their cars. I feel like no matter what the economic situation is, in Urban setting there is always a high likelihood of crime to be committed.

NEW YORK TIMES

The effects of crime

Crime has numerous effects, not only does it affect the person who is committing the crime but it affects the community the crime is taking place in. Besides the obvious effects that are felt directly from crime, the tax payers are hit the hardest in the article that i read. New prisons and jails, programs for criminals, and money for more police protection all come directly and indirectly out of the pocket of the taxpayers in America. Studies have shown that a society will pays over the twice the average household income for one inmate's incarceration. This basically means that instead of money being invested into things that will help out a community like: higher wages or better education, their money is going towards keeping criminals safe and well fed. Most people who commit crimes dont realize that by committing that one crime, their community can be paying for it long after the crime is committed. They may not think their crime they are committing will affect anyone outside of themselves but they dont realize the whole community can be affected by a single robbed gas station, a mugging, or breaking into someones house.

Crime and The Media

Crime in urban cities has numerous effects but what effects people in order for them to commit crime? How do these people justify and believe for the crimes they commit to be acceptable? The media plays a much bigger role in crime than you would think. A big problem for these people is that crime is often glorifies by members of their community and it is also glorified by music, movies, and television. So alot of the people who commit crime find it to be socially acceptable because they see it in movies, television, and they see successful rap artists who glorify crime in their music. If you saw someone who you look up to and want to be, doing something or saying something is ok to do, most likely your going to want to take parts in those things also. The rap industry makes it so it is acceptable to commit crime, do drugs, and objectify women. I feel that it is sending the wrong message to people these days. It basically just asking for people to go out and commit crimes and sell drugs. I think a way to fix this problem is to censor the messages that these artists are putting out, if we try an sensor some this stuff it will help out alot and hopefully cut down the rate of crime.

Crime and Poverty

When talking about crime there are usually factors that directly affect crime and become reasons why crime takes place. Poverty is usually a main factor that directly affects crime. In urban cities, you see all forms of poverty almost every where you go. Alot of crime in cities takes place due to poverty, these people need money and they believe that the only way for them to obtain money is to commit a crime that will gain them money or valuable objects. Drug dealing and robbery are the main crimes that directly linked to poverty. Dealing drugs gives these people fast cash without having to actually work a nine to five job, and robbery gives them instant cash and valuables. I believe people of poverty in Urban cities see crime as the only way for them to escape poverty. Especially young kids who have grown up seeing, older people selling drugs and robbing people to make money. It is very to hard to be accustomed to something for your whole life and end up not being a part of this. I feel like a good way to combat this problem, is to have more jobs created in urban areas and have centers built for people to go who are in serious poverty. If people have a place to go to get a meal and have a place to sleep,i think that they are less likely to commit crime. If more jobs are created, more and more people wont have to revert to crime in order to put food on the tables for themselves and their families.

Two men charged Armed Robbery

Armed robbery is often a major issue discussed when you talk about crime, especially when you talk about crime in an urban city. In the article i found, two men were charged with a string of armed robbery charges. These men were charged with walking up to victims and holding them at gunpoint while stealing money, cellphones, and other valuables. These men were said to be part of a gang and they were carry out these robberies in order to gain admittance to the specific gang they were trying to become a part of. This shows how gangs are in direct correlation to crime in urban areas. These men resorted to crime in order to be accepted into the gang, It is very troubling that these men commited crimes just to be associated with and become part of gang. I believe that if these men would have been in school or had grown up with good values, this would have never happened. It tough tho because growing up in an Urban city, you are around gangs and violence your whole life, so for most it is almost inevitable for them to also become a part of it.

Crime Statistics

This blog is about the statistics in crime across the United States. Through this website i was able to narrow the search down to South Carolina and then it gave me a list of individual cities, where i found the crime statistics of columbia. The results were kind of shocking to me and kind of hard for me to figure out a reason why the stats are the way they are. The total violent crime rate average has gone down since 1980, which i find very hard to believe. I find it hard to believe because the economy is not good right now and usually when the economy is down more crime usually follows. When the economy is bad you need money and for some the only way for them to obtain money is through crime. Also there is a gap and not every single year is accounted for since 1980. This seems to parallel something we talked about in class about altered statistics for a specific outcome. I think they left out years on the list so it would support there hypothesis that violent crime rate is not occurring as often

Shocking Statistics Don't Look Good for Columbia

The city of Columbia would not be happy to see some statistics that I came across. You'd like to think that you live in a relatively safe city while going to college but these statistics don't fare well. Although the Statisctics are from 2009 they show very bad trends. The city violent crime rate in Cola was higher than the violent crime rate in SC by 55.98%. That is a pretty shocking stat but that's not it. Also, the city property crime rate was higher by 54.84%.

Compared to a National level it doesn't look acceptable for Columbia's rates to be so high. This surely calls for some kind of change in Cola's way of stopping and fighting crime. Since these statistics were from 2009, hopefully they have found ways to crack down and do away with these embarrassing stats.

Holiday Safety Tips

When ever the holidays roll around, crime can often follow. For example, while being home for Thanksgiving break i came across a story from Fox News that was about a woman who pepper sprayed about 20 people at a Walmart so she could get the half price Xbox 360. Shopping can sometimes bring the best out in people durring the holidays or the absolute worse.

I came across the Columbia Police Department website and on the homepage found a link for some Holiday Safety tips. These tips look very useful and include tips when it comes to things such as shopping, traveling, child safety, ATM's , and home. All of the tips are useful and provide good ways of keeping criminals away from your belongings. It explains how criminals can be more inclined to rob you when they know your carrying money for presents or expensive electronics to give to loved ones.

The link shows just how some people don't have the holiday cheer anymore and are willing to go out of their way to give themselves and yourself a hard time. So remember to take advantage of these tips so you and your family can enjoy the holidays

State Sees Large Increase In Concealed Weapons Permits

Our state is at an all-time high for people who obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit. It's nearly 10,000 more this year as of October than the number of applicants in 2008. The total number of people with the permit is around 100,000 for the whole state.
The current debate on gun control is a matter of opinion. I personally find it terrifying that these numbers are rising given the current economic and societal conditions. It's hard to find a job and people are mad. More people than ever are getting concealed weapon permits meaning they can take their concealed weapons anywhere except churches, hospitals, schools, and government buildings. The process is pretty simple and the actual permit only costs $50.
With the current rates of such high property crime, the last thing we need is more people getting concealed weapons and carrying them around everywhere, in my opinion.
Guns cause far too many accidents and could be prevented if we did not give out permits so easily. However, people wish to pursue their rights to bear arms so it will be.

Counterfeit Items at Flea Market

Four people have been arrested in West Columbia for selling multiple counterfeit items at the Metro Flea Market on Highway 1. They were trafficking illegal goods such as pirated movies and music, fake designer hand bags, coats, and other apparel. The brands that were forged included Air Jordan, Coogi, Coach, Ecko, Ed Hardy, Gucci, Nascar, NFL, Nike, Prada, and many others. The value of the products are estimated to be around $240,000. They are facing charges for trademark violation and possible charges from the music industry and motion pictures of America for the illegal copying and distributing of music and movies. Two other people are being held in connection to providing some of the trafficked goods. People are very frustrated with the inferior goods that they purchased from the illegal booth.
The bigger issue is the amount of fraud and illegal activity people are willing to do to make money these days. With the current economic condition, people are very frustrated, desperate, and need money. It's not fair that they sold goods to people under deceiful terms, but it's not a total surprise seeing that everyone needs to make money somehow. These people could have done a lot worse things to make money and therefore, I don't really think punishment will improve this. They stole from the "man" (Music Industry, MPAA, and mocked couture brands) and then sold it to the public to make some money. Considering all of those companies/brands have tons of money, I don't think these four deserve to be punished too harshly. They were wrong, but the bigger issue is that with these times where it's so very difficult to get a job, fraud will be abundant as we all need to survive.

More Crime in Cities Than in Rural Areas

Crime rates are much higher in cities than in rural area but what is the reason for this? First more and more people are inhabiting cities every single day and less and less people are living in rural areas. The more people you have the more likely there is for crime, which begins to explain why cities have more crime. After reading the article i believe the urban cities influence the crime rate. Gangs are growing in numbers in these urban cities and the people joining them seem to be getting younger and younger. I believe that the social influences and family structure play a large part in this. Kids see there friends joining gangs and are influence by the money that they are making being a part of this gang. Also alot of children in Urban areas grow up in single parent households, so kids are looking for something to be a part of and a strong male figure in their life. A way for them to find this is by joining gangs, and leads to more violence that takes place in the urban city

3 sentenced for hate crime

Three men were sentenced to prison for forcing an African-American man out of a South Carolina convenience store, threatening him with a chainsaw. The three men who were sentenced to prison were white males who claimed that they thought the African American male was trying to rob the store even though he was just coming in to buy a few things. This shows how racism is a major part of these actions, just because he was an African-American male coming into a store late at night they thought he was trying to rob the store owner. Stereotypes are a major issue today even though, it is not deemed to be that big of deal by many. These white men had no reason what so ever to threaten this man at the store, except for their own pre-concieved notions about African Americans. This is rediculous, something needs to be done in order to change this. I'm not saying it will be easy but people no matter how hard it may be, need to not to judge a book by its cover and stear clear of pre-conceived notions.

Gangs and Crime in South Carolina

This website was designed to provide criminal activity related to gang violence, victims of gang activity, gang offenders, and to provide estimates of gang population in South Carolina. It tells us that gang violence is on the rise in South Carolina and is becoming a major social issues that is affecting numerous amounts of people and the communities they live in. The rise in gang violence is attributed to the background of the participants and the community they are from. Most inner city kids have been shown to join gangs because of the influence that the gang community puts on them. They are around gangs their whole life so it is almost inevitable for them to get caught up in that mess. I believe if these people lived in a community that had a higher income rate, school systems that were prominent, and job opportunities, there would be less of chance of them joining gangs. In worse of communities they see joining a gang as the only way out and the only chance they have of making a good amount of money for themselves.

Man Held on Multiple Burglary Charges

Thomas McLean, 43, of Irmo has turned himself in and is currently charged with four counts of second-degree burglary. There are at least four more charges pending and he is believed to have broken into at least eight homes. He stole almost $50,000 worth of items including jewelry, cash, coins, silver flatware, prescriptions, and even a baby stroller. He then took many of the items to pawn shops and sold them. The crimes were committed between June and October. He was able to target this area because he grew up in the neighborhood and therefore knew it well.
The current economic conditions are partly to blame for these types of crimes. When people have no money or jobs, they are more inclined to steal from others. Everyone needs to survive and sometimes this is the only obvious way for people. I think if the job market and economy stabilizes, it may cause a decrease in this type of property crime. Meanwhile, I feel sorry for the victims as they may feel unsafe. It may help the area to have an increase in occasional police surveillance to help reassure their safety.

Woman Stabbed In Columbia

November 3rd, a woman was stabbed in Columbia while opening her door for strangers.

Article

Stop.

Re-Read that first statement.

Now I know my first real-life lesson was to never talk to strangers. I know that the woman is seriously injured and may face life threatening injuries, but if someone comes up to my door, their is no way that I'm going to just open it up. Roll down the window or something. I just don't get it. Maybe she thought she knew them?

Lets hope that she is okay!

More Stats on Crime

Looking into more statistics on crime in Columbia, I found a chart from city-data.com. This chart shows the number of crimes and then per 100,000 people.
This graph tends to validate some of the stats according to neighborhoodscout.com. It shows many of the same trends as the other website. Columbia seems to be following the national trend of decreasing crime rates with a spike in 2004.
More information regarding Columbia's crime, demographics, employment, and other data can be found at the website here.

Crime Rates in Columbia, SC

NeighborhoodScout.com is a tool that breaks down crime per neighborhood in a specific city to assist people in buying real estate. It shows crime data and compares it to state and national media stats.
According to the website, Columbia has a higher rate per 1,000 people than most cities it's size and it more dangerous than many other communities in the state per capita.
In Columbia, there are twice as many murders and twice the number of assaults than the national median. The number of rapes and robberies are significantly higher than the national median as well.
The website goes on to show many more stats and a map showing which areas have the highest crime.
Full Website with Stats
Even though this is a very useful tool, I am concerned about the validity. However, I still think it's somewhat accurate and can be used a very basic guide.

Misleading Crime Statistics

I found a website that shows crime rates and statistics of South Carolina from 1960-2010. Some of the numbers displayed are pretty shocking. But remembering what we talked about in class about misleading statistics I decided to check to see what could possibly skew the results.

Although the crime rates for almost every type of crime show pretty significant growth throughout those 50 years, the reader must remember and look at how the population of South Carolina has grown by a million. The more people around the more crimes that will take place.

Serivce Learning Opprotunity

My group for crime in the city plans to fulfill our service learning requirement by hopefully working with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. One of the best way to prevent crime on the street can be to help make a difference to the future. Teaching and mentoring young juveniles can be an essential part to helping with stopping crime.

They offer tons of different volunteer opportunities such as being a mentor, tutor, teen after school center, providing spiritual guidance, and several others. The department's website gives information about how each of these programs can actually help the kids in different ways. Each program has its unique benefits. The one that i think would be the best for our group and most benefical for the kids is the after school program.

I hope to contact the department and get more information about the whole department but specifically the teen after school center.

Police Officer Charged for Prostitution

One of our Columbia police officers was found at an EconoLodge with a well-known prostitute on Two Notch Road. The officer is 32 year old Mark Cornish. He was at the motel with a 17 year old girl who was charged with prostitution. Cornish was in uniform and fled the scene in his patrol car when deputies arrived. He had been with Columbia P.D. for two years.
It's always an issue when law enforcement breaks the law. While the police chief issued a statement to the media claiming that they will handle this situation fairly, it's hard to say what will really happen. He may get off easier than an offender who was not affiliated with police force would.
It's important that the officer is charged appropriately and not leniently due to his job status and possible connections. It's also important that our city gets help for the young girl and other girls like her. Increased opportunities for young women to make money and awareness about sexual health may deter women from prostituting themselves. She needs to get tested for STDs and HIV immediately. Since she is so young, there is hope that her life may get turned around if proper resources can help her to do better rather than just punishing her.

Purse Thief in Columbia

In Columbia, SC on October 12th

"a man tried to steal her purse through her open window after she finished placing grocery bags in the trunk of her car.
When the victim resisted the purse snatching, she told police the man pointed a handgun at her. The victim immediately stopped resisting, and Scott said the suspect stole her purse then ran to a getaway car. The victim was not hurt during the incident."

People are unbelievably desperate these days. Snatching an innocent ladies purse though? COME ON

Maybe we all need to carry guns when we go to Wal-Mart, or even a police escort because this has been an occurring theme in the nation.

Baby in Hospital After Abuse

A couple has been charged with abusing a two month old baby girl in Lexington county. The article did not indicate the exact relationship between the child and the guardians, but assumptions have been made that it was the child's mother and father who abused her. They brought her into the hospital for an unrelated medical problem where the doctors found that she had broken ribs and some brain trauma, consistent with repetitive, physical abuse.
The most apparent social problem with this article is child abuse. In our country there are many resources to help prevent child abuse and programs in place for this issue. However, it still occurs and the children are often emotionally and/or physically damaged for life. The abusers typically get prison sentence and then the case is closed. Parents are harming their children, getting caught, then going to jail creating dysfunction for their children and relying on the state to take care of all parties involved.
The solution to preventing this from reoccurring is unclear. Even with safe haven laws, state-funded programs to help at-risk abuse families, and abuse tip lines, children are still abused and parents still get away with committing this abuse.

Camera Footage in Five Points

With about 100 cameras in Five Points, nearly every action is caught on surveillance. This has helped lead to identifying and the capture of many suspects in property and violent crimes.
Recently, there was a fight where the media sought to obtain the footage to release to the public in efforts of finding the perps. This brought up an unforeseen issue; who owns the footage?
The cameras were put into place with revenue from the Five Points Association, City of Columbia, and donations from Statewide Security Systems. Statewide is a local security camera business and the owner Carey Shealy donated a retail value of $50,000 worth of cameras. With a monthly fee, Five Points Association pays Statewide to maintain the cameras and the footage.
In all technicality, Shealy owns the rights to all footage because he owns the cameras. The issue here is whether he should be required to hand over the footage and to whom he should give the footage. In the past he has been very helpful and willing to give any of the surveillance to the cops as they saw necessary. However, he has not always released it straight to the press.
There has been many articles and circulating questions as to whether these cameras are necessary, if they really help deter crime, and if they can help find criminals.
Many people visiting Five Points at night already feel unsafe and it's important that these cameras capture  crimes, especially violent ones. However, I feel that the City of Columbia should own all rights to the surveillance and not the owner of the company. It's too risky to think that Shealy may one day decide to not comply with cops request to view the footage to help solve a crime.

The suspect stole things that he could possible take to the pawn shop and get some quick money off of it. Rather than stealing things that would attract alot of attention from the cashier. He may of not had a job or was running low on money so he wanted to put a few dollars in his pocket. He may not of had family memebers that could support his needs or he could be living on his own.

Man Murdered Over Drugs

In Lexington County, a man was shot and killed at his house by two men trying to rob him. Allegedly the suspects were trying to steal money and crack from the man whom they regularly bought drugs from. The suspects are in custody and charged with armed robbery and murder.
This story reflects many problems in our society. First and most obviously, we have a big problem with gun crimes. It's been the highest among industrialized countries. It's also very clear that many people have problems with drug addiction. These men killed their drug dealer to get a fix. These men really just needed help to get clean, get a job, and make a good life. However, they will be in prison for the rest of their lives instead. Which brings up another point, the high incarceration rates of our country. Again, our country has some of the highest incarceration rates out of the most industrialized countries in the world.
These social problems are all interconnected. Drugs, violence, the environment, and our society perpetuates crime. We need to find better ways to prevent people from being criminals rather than waiting until they already are and serving them with punishment. It's a continual vicious cycle.

Assault in Five Points

Recently, there have been many violent altercations in Five Points occurring late at night. The most recent which included a group of young men resulted in a curfew for minors in the area. Random gun shots have been heard many times.
But what if the altercation is between grown men? Most recently, there was a fight in a bar parking lot between two grown men. The victim, who is currently critically injured, is 41 and the suspect is 27 years old. He was taken to jail on assault and battery charges.
The problem is that Five Points is a prime location for bad things to happen, especially violence. People drink too much and then fight. The current surveillance system does not work as a precautionary measure but as a way to gain information post-incident. Even with cops on every block, it still does not serve as a deterrent for people to fight.
Five Points is turning into a violent, sketchy, crime-ridden area. If things don't improve, it will quickly get worse and become an even more undesirable place to be. We don't want people to be scared in a part of town, especially one that is so close to our campus.

single parents and crimes

I read an article called "Single Parents Families a mojor reason for provety and crimes". ANd this particular summary talks about how women end up being single parents. And they feel like it is becasue of sex outside of the marriage. This is important becasue if you want to raise a child in our society you could possible do it with one child. But if you have a mom and father in the household there are a better chance the child will be better in life. If the child has his mom and father in the household togehter, it showa the child this is the right way a household should be. And in our society i think this is important for the child so when they grow up and have kids they are less likely to be single parents. I also feel that if the child has a mother and and father in their household the child is less likely to get in trouble, compared to a child with only one parent in the household. The child will always have someone watching them and telling them right from wrong. Compared to the child with only one parent the child would less likely have someone watching over them. And by that they will have a higher chance of getting into the wrong things.
